AI Rhino Protection

Vision and Goals

To combat the devastating effects of poaching and habitat loss, we aim to revolutionise rhino protection using innovative, tech-driven solutions. Our goal is to help ensure the long-term survival of Africa’s remaining rhino subspecies by integrating artificial intelligence with conservation practice. By safeguarding rhinos through predictive surveillance and real-time threat detection, we are creating a future where rhinos can roam safely and breed successfully in the wild.

This project is made possible through the support of our conservation partners, Rouxcel Technology ® and private South African reserves where this groundbreaking initiative is taking place.

Project in Action

Rhinos face an urgent battle for survival, with poaching syndicates growing more sophisticated and rhino habitats increasingly fragmented by agricultural expansion. While global bans on rhino horn trade remain in place, demand persists, fueled by outdated beliefs and status-driven consumption, putting immense pressure on dwindling populations.

Global Humane Conservation Fund of Africa has implemented an AI-enabled security system to protect a key population of southern white rhinos at a private reserve in South Africa. This system uses advanced pattern recognition and surveillance to detect and respond to potential threats in real time, greatly enhancing ranger effectiveness and deterring illegal activity before it happens.

Beyond improved protection, the technology has opened up new opportunities for research. Since implementation, we’ve been able to collect biological and behavioural data that was previously out of reach, offering vital insights into rhino movements, health and social dynamics. Encouragingly, these efforts are already showing impact: a new rhino calf has recently been born on the reserve, a sign of hope for the population’s future.
