One of the greatest conservation challenges of our time is space for species – preserving habitats for wildlife. As the human population continues to expand, the land available for wildlife is rapidly diminishing. Within some protected parks in Africa, megafauna such as elephants and rhinos are thriving. However, this success story comes with a significant challenge: overpopulation.
In these parks, elephants and rhinos are consuming vast amounts of vegetation, which all other wildlife depend on, either directly or indirectly. Elephants, in particular, are a keystone species and have a massive impact on their environment. When elephant numbers are managed within the carrying capacity for a protected area, they keep the ecosystem in balance. However, when their numbers are too many, this delicate balance is disturbed, impacting the entire ecosystem. This imbalance necessitates systemic change, innovative solutions, and collaboration between like-minded organizations.
One humane solution to this challenge is creating additional protected areas—safe, well-managed spaces for elephants and rhinos. These new conservation landscapes will serve as new homes for relocating scientifically determined numbers of elephants and rhinos from overpopulated parks. This type of relocation is known as translocation – the deliberate human-assisted movement of animals from one area to another for conservation purposes. Additionally, it is crucial to select the megafauna based on their social structures to maintain their family bonds, which are foundational to their societies.
Together with our partners at WeWild Africa, we have identified and planned such solutions. In the coming months, we aim to help relocate about 70 elephants and rhinos to these new conservation areas.

Moving megafauna safely requires various resources and to achieve our goal, we need to raise $147,000.
Support from friends like you makes these critical efforts possible. Your generosity directly impacts the survival and well-being of these elephants, rhinos and other wildlife, ensuring they can thrive in their natural habitat, while ensuring the welfare of all wildlife in the parks. Your gift also helps support Global Humane’s broader mission of protecting vulnerable wildlife across Africa, as well as all of American Humane’s lifesaving and humane programs.
Join us in making a difference. Together, we can ensure a future where wildlife thrives.
